It’s just taking some bricks up.. April 1, 2012

The weather was thankfully not too bad, the task seemed achievable. Equipment hired (cement mixer, angle grinder, skip, just small things) and boys lager stash at “workmen” levels

Impressive isn’t it! I can’t thank Pete enough – there is now a french drain around the slabs to try and ease the damp in the kitchen (as the bricks were far too close to the damp proof course before) and it actually drains to the drain and under the gate, and not towards the dining room door as it did before!

So I guess you want to know how it looks now? Well, Rich is just finishing clearing the winter debris off the slabs and I’m waiting for a delivery of a new trough and hanging basket then you’ll get your photos!

2 Beds March 27, 2010

So, a fab was had at the plot today – fab and slightly manic :D Headed to Wilko’s first thing to collect the waterbutt. Accidently fell into the greasy spoon for a fry up on the way :o Collected the butt, headed to the plot and this is what greeted us:

It’s been a lovely day today but with the occasional black cloud. So whilst it was sunny we put the water butt into place (to be moved later anyway – d’oh!), broke into the shed again and measured the broken door panel and window panel and then headed to B&Q. There we picked up compost (for the beds), a new hosepipe (to fill the butt), some more jiffy pellets and a spray gun thing for the hosepipe at home.

Then having gasped at the price of wood at B&Q rang our local timber merchant and found we had 40mins to hot foot it across our bit of brum and buy the wood we needed. Now I’m not a fan of the timber place, it’s not very welcoming and most of the communication seems to be in the language of the man grunt but they have good wood and it’s cheap. Wood and board acquired we headed back to the plot. I set about bagging up all the dead grass and other stuff the boys piled up last time.

When we left I was up to 10 bags and still have loads to do. Meanwhile Rich, powered with power tools, fitted the board and padlock on the shed – we can now get in without breaking in YAY

Now I know it’s not too attractive but at least it’s better than it was! And with a working padlock I can now use it.

Then he moved onto making 2 beds. Compost and wood bought, this is the end result

Looks cute doesn’t it! And like it is actually likely to grow something! That bed is my first one and the salsa bed. It will grow everything I need to make my own salsa – how successful things like peppers will be in it in the open in the middle of Erdington is another matter but hey, it’s worth a go!

We also put together the little bed for sunflowers, those will be started off at home to try and ensure some success!

We also met another neighbour, some other ones already met, and discussed whether the person who took the half next to mine will ever turn up!

So the next thing for tonight is to start off some other seeds, ready for transplanting and to pot on the ones that are already doing great. Plants are clever things, the like growing don’t they!
